What are direct hot water systems? (Underfloor Heating)

temp-productUntil fairly recently, direct hot water systems such as underfloor heating haven’t been considered a very mainstream product due to the cost and upheaval of having it fitted, widely thought of as a luxury item and not as a replacement for more conventional methods, its use was mainly confined to the more expensive properties or in football stadiums in assisting with the temperature of the pitch during harsh frosts.

This has changed drastically over the past few years and now direct hot water systems can be installed in practically any home, with almost any new or existing central heating system, and at a fraction of the cost that is usually associated with it.

How do direct hot water systems work?

A set of pipes are embedded into the construction of the floor, this turns the surface area under your feet into one large radiator, a reflective layer of insulation must be used under the pipework to direct the heat upwards, pipework from the floor is connected to a mixing manifold and is connected to your new or existing heating system, the mixing manifold controls how much water will flow from your boiler to the underfloor heating and in order to heat the room a lower water temperature is used to that of a conventional radiator, this makes the running costs of direct hot water systems lower and the productivity higher as the heat is not centred around the confinements of one area.

Can you tell me some of the benefits of direct hot water systems?

  • Gets rid of unsightly radiators in a room, giving your property more space, freeing up more walls and gives cleaner lines to the inside of your home.
  • Less wasteful when heating a room, the heat rises from the pipes under the floor more consistently and not centred around an expensive rapid heating radiator.
  • Heats up many types of flooring, imagine walking on a warm beach (without the sand in your toes), if your feet are warm, the rest of you feels warmer too!
  • Thermostats are placed in each room to give you more control over the temperature in your property, if you don’t use a room regularly then why would you want to heat it to the same climate as all your other more frequently used rooms?
  • It’s a great selling point to increase the resale price of your property and something to demonstrate when potential buyers come to view your property.

That sounds just like something I am looking for! Where can I find out more?
