underfloor heating is effective in the winter

UK winters are tough, it’s no secret, summer seems to fly by, while winter lasts an eternity. And while waking up to find your garden under 6 inches of snow can bring out the kid in all of us, it certainly puts your heating to the test. Heating your home throughout the prolonged low temperatures can be expensive. This is why we always recommend investing in an underfloor heating system, this low-cost, energy-efficient method of heating your home drastically reduces your running costs, combine this with effective insulation and you have a winning combo.

The radiant heat provided by an effective underfloor heating system is a great way to heat your home, however, if you don’t eradicate any draughts that draw in cold air from outside even an underfloor heating system is not going to be as energy efficient as it should be. Identify any problem spots and deal with them as best you can, double glazing and proper insulation are great starting points. Remember anywhere cold air can enter your home, hot air can escape!

Which is better – Underfloor Heating or Radiators?

Radiators are a common sight in many homes, however, they are not actually an efficient way to heat your home. Despite their name radiators don’t actually use radiant heat, they use convection heating. Convection heating heats a room up very unevenly, the majority of the heat generated collects at the top of the room before being pushed across the ceiling and down the other side. Underfloor heating systems use true radiant heating. By heating the room from the ground up, and throughout the length and breadth of the room, underfloor heating heats the room evenly. Radiant heat is caused by the underfloor heating system warming objects in the room, which in turn emit their own heat, first the warm water passing through the pipes in your underfloor heating system warms the floor, then the floor covering, then you and your furniture, the last thing it heats is the ceiling! Not only is this a more cost-effective way of heating your home, but it also creates a much more natural experience. Say Goodbye to Inefficient Radiators!

Insulating a house with Underfloor Heating

Insulation and heating systems go hand in hand. We recommend you insulate your home as much as possible. An underfloor heating system is great at heating a home, but if all the heat it generates escapes into the atmosphere you may as well leave it turned off! Insulating your underfloor heating pack as you install it is a great idea, this will help to ensure that your pipe network remains hot at all times.
