Underfloor heating protection example of a roomHeating protection is important if you have an underfloor heating system in your home or business premises. Everyone wants the best value for money when they have invested in a heating product and that is why it’s important to protect that product. Heating protection products will ensure your underfloor heating product lasts longer and provides you with the best service possible.

Constant flow of water

One heating protection product worth getting is a spring loaded auto bypass valve. These are used on all modern heating systems. The auto bypass valve is designed to protect your heating from excessive wear on a main circulating pump by automatically opening and closing depending on the system load, giving the system circulating pump a minimal but constant flow of water when the thermostatic radiator valves or zone valves close.

All modern heating systems have pump overrun built into boilers, this enables the pump to get rid of excess heat from the heat exchanger when there is no more demand for heat. If motorised valves and TRV’s are fitted there needs to be an auto bypass valve for this process to happen.

Protected from corrosion/freezing

little girl with wall-paperThe two main causes of central heating inefficiency are lime-scale and corrosion, these can lead to boiler inefficiency and a noisy system amongst other problems. Sentinel inhibited antifreeze will provide heating protection by keeping the system nice and clean from corrosion for a prolonged lifetime.

If you are testing your underfloor heating system in winter, have a property that’s vulnerable to low temperatures, or is unoccupied during the winter months, using sentinel inhibited antifreeze makes sense as it will protect your system metals against corrosion, whilst also protecting it against low temperatures. For every 100 meters of pipe 2.5 litres will protect your system up to -6˚c.

Magnetic heating protection

Even with inhibitor in your heating system, low levels of corrosion can occur. In the absence of air this is usually black magnetite, which is magnetic in nature and can therefore be captured with a magnet. This is why grasslin magnetic filter offers great heating protection. Magnetite is seven times heavier than water but some particles will still be dispersed around the system by the flow. If you don’t have a magnetic filter fitted, these particles will end up in the circulator pump, due to its electromagnetic properties and also boiler heat exchangers where it will cause premature wear.

Key features of the grasslin magnetic filter are

  • bottom mounted bleed point
  • ease of fully emptying the canister
  • canister doubles as a dosing point for liquid chemical additives and sampling point to analyse the system water.
