low maintenance underfloor heating solutions. We always advise our customers to make sure they use heating protection products whenever they install an underfloor heating system in either their home or business premises. To ensure that you get the best out of your system it is always wise to make sure that it is adequately protected, heating protection products help to both prolong the life of your system and ensure you get the best possible service.

Constant Water Flow

Spring-loaded bypass valves are a great example of heating protection, these are used on all modern heating systems. These valves are designed to reduce the wear on the main circulating pump, this is done by automatically opening and closing dependant on the load on the system. This gives the heating systems circulating pump a minimal but constant flow of water when the thermostatic radiator valves or zone valves close

All modern heating systems have pump overrun built into the boilers, this enables the pump to get expel any excess heat from the heat exchanger when there is no more demand for it. If motorised valves and TRV’s are fitted there needs to be an auto bypass valve for this process to happen.

Protecting Underfloor Heating Against Corrosion and Freezing

wooden flooring underfloor heatingThe two main causes of inefficiency in an underfloor heating system are lime-scale and corrosion, these can lead to both poor efficiency and a noisy disruptive system. With the use of sentinel inhibited antifreeze your underfloor heating system will be kept clean and clear from corrosion, prolonging its lifespan.

Using sentinel inhibited antifreeze also makes a lot of sense if you are testing your underfloor heating system in winter, it’s in a property that has been unoccupied during the winter months or is vulnerable to low temperatures. This antifreeze protects the metals in your system against corrosion and low temperatures, it is recommended that you use 2.5 litres of antifreeze for every 100m of pipes in your system. This protects your system down to -6˚c.

Magnetic Protection For Underfloor Heating

Even with sentinel inhibited antifreeze in your underfloor heating system some level of corrosion can occur, nothing is perfect. In a system free from air this corrosion usually manifests as black magnetite, this by nature is magnetic which means that is can be collected or captured using magnets. Grasslin magnetic filters are a great method of controlling and collecting this magnetic debris. Magnetite is seven times heavier than water, however, some particles are still dispersed throughout the system with the flow of water. Without magnetic filters, in place to capture this debris, it can make its way to the circulator pump causing undue wear and shortening your pumps lifespan.

Key features of the grasslin magnetic filter are

  • The bleed point is located on the bottom
  • ease of fully emptying the canister
  • canister doubles as a dosing point for liquid chemical additives and sampling point to analyse the system water.
