Which floor covering should you choose?
Porcelain or Ceramic Tiles are generally regarded as the best floor coverings for use with underfloor heating systems and conduct heat exceptionally well. They don’t block heat; instead, they act like a sponge, soaking up the heat from the underfloor heating pipes below and transferring it quickly into the room. These type of tiles also have no heat limit and can be used at any temperature without warping, cracking or discolouring.
Natural Stone, Engineered Wood, and Luxury Vinyl Tiles (LVT) also work well IF rated for underfloor heating. We would never recommend using any flooring products that are not rated for underfloor heating usage, as there is no way to know if these are suitable and/or safe.
Carpet can be used as a floor covering on top of an underfloor heating system, however, it should have a low combined tog rating (carpet + underlay) to avoid reducing heat output and efficiency. The tog rating will directly affect how much heat is transferred into the room from your heating system.
