Underfloor heating systems can be loosely divided into two different categories, single-zone or multi-zone. A single-zone system is ideal for people seeking to heat a single room or zone, such as a conservatory or extension. If however, you want to heat multiple rooms or zones in your home and take advantage of the fine level of control you can have when using a smart thermostat then a multi-zone installation is probably best for you.
A key component of a single-zone underfloor heating system is a two-port zone valve. This valve works in conjunction with the thermostat to control the flow of hot water throughout the system. When you turn on or turn up the thermostat, the zone valve opens, letting more hot water flow through the underfloor heating pipes and therefore increasing the amount of radiant heat that is provided by the system.
Zone valves are responsible for reducing energy wastage, they ensure that hot water and therefore heat is there as and when you need it, however, they also ensure that when you don’t need it, energy is not wasted on heating a system that is not in use. Combine a zone valve with a smart thermostat and you have a really effective and energy efficient underfloor heating system. Zone valves play a really key part so it is essential to make sure that it is operational.
